MAWSON EXPEDITION.

ROYAL CONGRATULATIONS. Melbourne, Thursday,

Lord Denman, Governor - General, has sent a wireless message to Dr Mawsoni conveying the congratulations of King George on the success of his expedition, and the establishment of the first wireless communication with the Antarctic. His Majesty expresses regret at the deaths of Lieut. Ninnia and Dr Mertz.

A reply to Dr Mawson's request for permission to confer the name of "King George V. Land" on the new territory discovered by him will be sent at a later date.

IN TOUCH WITH MAWSON. Sydney, Friday

Professor David has received a cablegram from Commander Evans of the Scott expedition asking him to convey his deepest sympathy with the Australian expedition in the loss of Lieut. Ninnis and Dr Mertz.

No further details of the death of the two men have yet come to hand.

The Hobart wireless station waß in touch with Dr Mawson last night through Macquarie Island station. Mawson'B station acknowledged the messages and seemed working exceedingly well, though the time of working is still somewhat limited.
