TANGITU MAIN ROAD.

THE WORK PROCEEDING. Work on the Waimiha-Tangitu road is being pushed ahead by the Pubilc Works Department, a considerable staff of workmen being employed, "he tramline on which the metal is to be trucked is laid for a distance of about two and a half miles, but a short stretch has yet to be completed at Waimiha before the line can be used. The contract for carting the metal has been let to Mr J. McGratb, who is engaged at present in carting gravel from the river until the tram is completed. There is no doubt the reputation of the road as being one o the worst in the Dominion is well earned. For a distance of about two miles on the Waimiha side of the dividing range the Btate of the road would be difficult to imagine by any one who had not seen it. The road is formed along a steep sidling on the shady side of the hill and even in midsummer this portion is rarely free from water. The ridges and holes made by much pack horse traffic render the passage of a vehicle impossible, while only the corduroy laid down last season in placeß makes the road passable where water accumulates. Unfortunately this section of the road is furthest away from the metal supple, and the prospect of having the worst part of the road unmetalled during the coming winter is not reassuring to the settlers.
