AN EXAMPLE IN METALLING.

A GOOD WINTER'S WORK. A similar moral to that drawn from the story of the tortoise and the hare may be extracted from the story told respecting thß metalling of a stretch of the Te Kuiti-Mokau road towards Mahoenui. It appears that a couple of men were working on the road breaking metal in the early part of: last winter, and word was received by them to cease operations. The settlers in the vicinity made strong representations to the Government to have the men kept on with the result that the stonebreaking operations by the pair were continued until nearlv Christmas. A contract for carting and spreading the metal was let to a settler, and the job is now completed. About a mile of one of the worst hills on the road to Mahoenui is well metalled, and the costt of quarrying and breaking works ou at 5s 6rl a yard. Mr J. Wall, who furnished the fact? to a Chronicle representative, waa not sure of the cost of carting, but as the metal was broken very close to the road the carting was cheaply undertaken. Considering that with crusher and teams a mile of metalling takes a fair portion of the average working season, there is apparently something to be said for the hand breaking methods.
