Speaking at a function in celebration of Yuan Shih Kai's acceptance of the presidency of tho Chineso Kopublic, a leading Chinese merchant, in condemning Australia's restrictive measures, said that as Chinese became more enlightened, the Commonwealth would promptly find it prudent to adpot more conciliatory methods of treating them, otherwise Australian goods would not find a place in Chinese markets. Y'eara ago China was regarded as fair game for other nations. Tn-day the same nations were watching with the greatest interest ths trend of affairs in China.
