MET AN OVERPOWERING BLIZZARD. EVANS DIES FROM ACCIDENT. London, Monday. The announcement of the calamity which befell Captain Scott and the Southern party was made at a meeting of the Royal Geographical Society to-night. Mr Douglas W. Freshfield, president of the society, who presided in the absence of Lord Curzon. the official head, stated that they had met in the shadow of a great calamity. Captain Scott and the four members of bi3 party reached the South Pole on January 18th. They found the records left by Captain Amundsen, the Norwegian explore, and were pursuing scientific investigations when, on March 29th, they were overtaken by an overpowering blizzard. Captain Scott, Dr Wilson, and Lieut. Bowers died on that date. Captain Oaies died some time later than his comrades. Petty officer Evans succumbed lo accident. The society sympathised with Mrs Scott, and could only say farewell to a band of heroes whose names would shine as the examples of the highest courage. Captain Scott would live in memory as an ideal English sailor.
