TOWN DRAINAGE CONNECTIONS.
QUESTION OF FINANCE.
When the minute referring to the loan which is being raised for the purpose of making the house connections with the town drainage system was being read at the Borough Council meeting on Monday night, Cr Jones entered a protest. He said he had no recollection of the motion which was referred to having been dealt with either in committee or in open council. The idea set forth in the motion was that the council should provide 75 per cent, of the cost and the ratepayer 25 per cent, tne 75 per cent, to be repaid to the council by way of rates. He held that the council should borrow sufficient money to pay for the whole connection, and the ratepayers could contribute the necessarv amuunt of interest and sinkino fund on the loan. The sewerage connections had to be put in and the easier it was made for the ratepayers the better. It was costing the council nothing in any case, and the difference in a loan which would provide the whole amount as compared with providing 75 per cent, thereof was not worth consideration as far as the council was concerned. On the other hand the difference might mean a pinch for a number of the ratepayers who were obliged to have the connections The Mayor explained that the matter had been considered both in committee, and in open council, and the motion had been passed. There could now be no discussion on the point. ..Cr Jones said at all events he wished to enter his protest against the adoption of a scheme which he could not support.
