Newton King reports:—

On 13tb inst. at Awatuna East I held a clearing sale on account of Mr and Mrs R. Tobin. There was a splendid attendance of the public, with a brisk demand throughout for the dairy herd which sold as follows: —Young dairy cows £5 5s to £8 10s, aged £4 to £4 10s, bull £5 15s t forward empty cows £4 15s, eighteen months empty heifers £4 ss, calves 19s to 265. sows £2 to £2 7s 6d, Awatuna factory shares 13s, single furrow plough £5. At Rahotu on 14th inst. I had a very small entry which sold as follows: —Fifteen months steers £3 to £3 6b, two and a-half year heifers £4 17s, eighteen month heifers £3 10s, bulls £3 5s to £7 Is. store cows £4 Is to £4JL3s, aged cows £2 Is to £3, weaner pigs 10s 6d. e The Farmers' Auctioneering Go. report:— At Matamata on 15th inst. we had an entry of 70 pigs, 200 sheep, and 631 cattle, the cattle including 330 weaner calves. Weaner pigs 7s 6d to 12s, slips 13s 6d to 22s (3d, fat ewes 13s, fat wethers 18s to 19a, best, calves 355, to 445, medium sorts 25s to 30s, fat cows £5 to £7, small fat steers £8 ss, forward cows £4 5s to £4 15s, yearling steers £3 8s to £3 10s. yearling heifers £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d, heavy fat bulls £7 10a to £8 ss, meaty bulls £5 to £6 ss, or about 17s 6d to 18s 6d per 1001b.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.

Wellington, Monday.

The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, January 18th, is as follows: —

Mutton.—The market is very firm on account of small supply, and a continuance of high prices is anticipated. Canterbury cannot be quoted. North Island 4gd. Lamb. —The market is firm, with good demand, especially for best quality. New Zealand new season's 6|d, last season's sfd. There is a large supply of Australian, but many carcases are inferior in quality. Australian 5Jd, River Plate s£d. Butter.—The market is dull on account of heavy arrivals, but priceß are well maintained. The supply of margarine is large, and is a serious competitor. The average price for the week for choicest New Zealand butter is 116 a, Danish 1275, Siberian 109s, Australian 110 a. Argentine 110s.

Cheese.-r-The market is steady with more demand, which is principally speculative. The average price for the week for finest New Zealand cheese is 60s.

Hemp.—The market is firm, with general and active demand. Good speculative business has been done. Reports from Manila indicate a strong market. Spot New Zealand good fair grade £33, New Zealand fair grade £3l 10s, fair current Manila £33, January to March shipments of New Zealand good fair grade £33 10s, fair grade £3l 10s, fair current Manila £35. The output from Manila for the week was 25,000 bales. The stock of New Zealand on hand is 336 tons.
