TE KUITI-MOKAU ROAD.

•county decline responsibility. DEPARTMENT TO CARRY ON • WORK. The following letter from the Public Works Department with respect to the Te Kuiti-Mokau road waß read at the meeting of the Waitomo County Council on Monday evening:— . " I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 17th inst., intimating that the Waitomo County Council declines to take up the expenditure of the unauthorised balance of vote for Te Kuiti-Mokau road, and also that it prefers to hand back to the department for expenditure the unexpended balance of authority already issued in respect of this work. In reply I have to state that the Minister regrets the attitude which the council has taken up in this matter, but in view of the urgency of the work, and the fact that settlers are being adversely affected by the delay in carrying out the same, he has approved of its being carried out by the department. I have, therefore, to request you to be good enough to regard as cancelled the unexpended balance of authority issued to your council. The stone-crushing plants loaned to your council for use in con- ' nection with this work will, of course. ' now be required by the department, and 1 have to request you to be good enough to make arrangements to hand them over to the assistant road engineer, as early as possible.—H. J. H. BLOW, Under Swcretary." MONEY AVAILABLE. As there appears to be some doubt in the mind 3 of those interested concerning the amount of money available for expenditure on the Te KuitiMokau road, the following figures supplied by the Public Works Department to Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, will have the effect of making the position clear. The figures were obtained from the department on Monday, and are published on Mr Wilson's authority:—Authorised balance in the hands of the engineer, £2404 15s 4d; unauthorised balance, £1670 15s 8d; total. £4075 lis.
