MR LOUGHNAN FAREWELLED.

DINNER AT HAMILTON.

Mr F. O'B. Loughnan, who for the past four years has filled the position of Stipendiary Magistrate for the Waikato district, was tendered a farewell'dinner at Hamilton on Tuesday evening by the members of the legal profession of Waikato and the King Country. Mr Rawson, S.M., who succeeds Mr Loughnan as magistrate for the district, was also present. ■> In the unavoidable absence of Mr Swarbrick, president of the Hamilton Law Society, the chair was occupied by Mr C. L. MacDiarmid, who read apologies from several practitioners, speaking in high terms of the departing magistrate and regretting their inability to be present. After the toast of the King had been proposed, the chairman proposed the toast of Mr Loughnan, and in doing so expressed the deep regret of the Bar in this district at the departure of their esteemed and popular magistrate. A magistrate had a very difficult task before him in giving his decisions, but the chairman couldassuie Mr Loughnan that the profession as a whole thoroughly appreciated his efforts in this direction, and even though on the losing side, accepted his judgment in the proper, spirit. Mr Loughnan, in responding, thanked the chairman for his kindly remarks; he was an old practitioner himself, and he was, as a result, able to look at the case from the counsel's point of view as well as from the magistrate's noint of view. In many of the cases which had come before him both counsel so ably placed the facta and the law before him to prove that judgment should go in their favour, that his only regret was that he was unable to oblige both sides! He would always appreciate the friendly relations which had existed between him and the Bar in this district. f.\ Mr Loughnan takes up his duties at Marlborough this month.
