FOR THE SABBATH.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS FROM
DAYS AND YEARS.
Arise from the dead, and Christ Bhalligive thee light.—Ephesiana 5, ivi v.
"Arise and work while it is day, for the night cometh therein no man can work," says our Saviour Himself. ' Happy are they, who rise early in theV morning of their youth; for the day of life is very short, and Ahe act .of .Christianity long and difficult. Is it not a grievous thing that men consider not why they came into ' the world till they' be upon the paint of going out again, not think how to live till they be summoned to die?
But most of all unhappy he who never wakes out of that dream of false happiness till he fall into eternity.
Arise, then, betimes, and prevent that sad awakening. —Archbishop Leighton.
Christ, whose glory fills the skief, Christ, the true, the only Light, Sun of. Righteousness, arise,. ~ Triumph o'er the shades of night; Dayspririg from on high be near; Daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn . Unaccompanied by Thee, joyless is the day's return \ Till Thy mercy's beams I sec'; Till Thy inward light impart. Glad my eyee, and warm my thoughts.
—Charles Wesley.
UGANDA.
At a recent meeting of the general committee of the C.M.S. it was stated that Bishop Tucker had again arrived in England after a brief farewell visit to his. diocese. Shortly before leaving Uganda the Bishop, in the presence of about thirty missionaries was presented with a signetring and cheque as a mark of the esteem and affection in which he had been held by his 'fello..-workers in th mission dttring the twenty one years of tiia episcopate:; The bishop during his few weeks in the; country, held live confirmations, at,, which there were 883 candidates. The figures for Namirembe, 422 (585 men and 237 women), constitute a record but the candidates included those from other stations wtuch the Bishop was unable to visit separately owing to lack of sufficient time. He also officiated at his forty-second and largest ordination, eleven candidates (ten of whom were natives) being ordained. It must be with u sense of deep thankfbnesa that the Bishpo is ble to lay down his work. Twentyone years ago he found a small company of 200 Christians and to-day there is a chucb of 70,000 members, with an organised constitution; with a diocesan fund which has a canssiderable balance in hand; with its Board of Missions and its Board of Study, and with a keen missionary spirit which was, strikingly evidenced by 120 teachers set forth recentlv in response to the Bishop's appeal for 100 workers for the adjoining countries.— London Guardian.
Tbe Archbishop of York at a Quiet Day for Clergy gave an apt illustration about the Holy Spirit. He said "I remember not long ago. just before a great gathering of men, feeling tired and stale and dull and spiritless, and all the efforts that were made to work up an effective speech were use less. Then 1 drove out rapidly to Flamborough Head, and stood in the gale, and. in five minutes physical recovery arid power . came because one Riled the lungs with fresh air I thought then how -true it wan that thus we must receive the wind of God the Divine Spirit tta blows from the quarter where my Lord Jesus reigns. Yes, we must be quiet, be still and receive the power of the Holy Ghost "
