TANGITU MAIN ROAD.

PROGRESS OF WORK

LABOUR

The prejinjiratywork in connection } with the metalling of the Tangitu , main road in now well in band, and } given fine weather there in every rea- -■ .sqn to hope the permanent formation | of the {pad will be accomplished dur ing the season. It is intended to lay . a wopflen tramline from Waimiha to , the top of the dividing range, a distance of about five mileß, and the metal will be carried on tracks. At present the laying of the tram is being pushed ahead, aa tart having been made at the point nearest the sawmill, about two miles from Waimiha. The rails are being laid both ways, and it should not be long be- , fore the connection is completed. In view of the fact that the road bears a great amount of traffic, and, where it traverses hush country, becomes a veritable Bludge channel in winter, it Is intended to lay a foundation of spawls which will carry the metal. It is probable that good quarry will be obtained about-the point at which the metalling is to be commenced.-and if such is the case the work will'be hastened considerably in consequence. The road is being widened and graded as the tram is laid down, and a considerable amount of work is necessary in order to get the required width some of the faces which have to be taken back being botb steep and b'gh. However once the, tram is' completed the question of decent communication between the settlement and th« railway will be solveo, and even if it is found to. be imposssible to get much metalling completed before winter the' position will bo immeasurably improved compared with the past , three seasons. A drawback to tbi-oV partment i| the scarcity of labour and employment can be found on the work lsi*t/ twenty mote; *;gooa^
