Own Correspondent. On Wednesday, 18th inst., the parents and children connected with the Wairere Falls school held their picnic. At 11 a.m. they all assembled at the school, where the teacher (Mr Ligertwood) gave out the prizes which the committee had generously contributed. Mr Milner, in a short sp°ech, congratulated those present on the very prosperous state of the school making special reference to the school gardens, which, according to Inspector McKenzie's report, "reflected great credit on both teacher and pupils, and presented a most attractive appearance." Twelve months ago the school had a verv dreary look, amidst a wilderness of fern, but through the energy of the committee, with the teacher and pupils in fencing, painting, and laying out and planting the gardens and Dlayground, it now looks an oasis in the desert, and deerves all the praise the inspector bestowed on it. An adtournmet was made to the FalJs, where the "billy" was set a-boiling. Mesdames Leith, McKenzie, Milner, Hilleur, Hooper and Williams supplied the various and abundant dainties, Which the children enjoyed to the full Races among the youngsters were then got off, and numerous and curiou3 were the prizes in the shape of toys, etc., provided by the committee. Then followed several "lolly scrums," and after a second supply of tea and cakes, the party set off for home, well pleased and well tired with their outing.
