These picnics have been most successful and enioyable in the past and have become quite an institution. Church building; funds are very much in evidence at present. The Anglicans are holding a bazaar on Saturday/at which the proceeds from the previous gift afternoon, as well as the doll and cushion afternoon are to be sold or otherwise disposed of. This is to be followed up by a concert and farce ten days later, and probably a basket social early in the New Year. The Chamber of Commerce held their monthly meeting in Mr Willis' office on Tuesday evening. There was a very good attendance and several new members were proposed. The Postal Department notified that a tender had been accepted for the Kawhia mail service, but admitting that the Otorohanga tender was better from a departmental point of view. The tender accepted was for the old route via Pirongia and Te Awamutu, and was £l6B higher than the tender for the Otorohanga route. The matter has evoked considerable comment, and'it was 1 considered that Otorohanga had not received "a square deal" in that the Government took cognisance of a petition from one route without allowing the lowest tenderers an opportunity of placing their side of the question.
