THE TANGITU SETTLERS.

URGENT REQUIREMENTS. SATISFACTORY ARRANGEMENTS When the present Governme.it took office there was naturally much specu lation as to whether promises given or implied by thd previous administration would be carried out. In this respect the. position of settlers on Improved Farm sections was somewhat serious, and it was of the highest importance that the work of the Government should be carried out. It was only to be expected that a new administration could not give definite pledges of an important nature until investigation had been made, but settlers will be gratified to learn that their requests have in every case been granted. Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, has been assiduous in his efforts on behalf of the settlers, and the letter from the Minister of Lands (Mr Massey) to Mr Wilson, is an indication that the requirements of the settlers are to receive every consideration. The letter reads: <<gj r; With reference to your interview with me on the 24th September last, in company with Mr Bacon, one of the settlers on the Tangitu settlement, and his statement that a promise had been made by the iate Commissioner of Crown Lands. New Plymouth (Mr Armstrong), that the bills of sale given over the stock would not interfere with th<? issue of the settlers' leases, 1 have to inform j you that careful search has been made, but no trace can be found that any such promise was made. However, it has now been decided that the bills'of sale shall in no way interfere with the issue of the leases in question. "Astoroading of the settlement, all necessary authorities have been issued to the Public Works Department, which has been requested to expedite the completion of the work as much as possible. In regard to the question of remission, or postponement of payment of rent, section 1 of the Land Laws Amendment Act, 1912, provides that on th* recommendation of the Land Board, payment of rent may be postponed from time to time for a total period not exceeding three years. If Mr Bacon, or other settlers on Tangitu, require a further concession in this respect, they can make application to the Taranaki Land Board in due course, when the matter will receive careful consideration."
