A CHARGE OF THEFT.
MAORI COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. A short sitting of the court waß held at To Kuiti on Thursday before Messrs E. 11. Hardy and J. Tammadge, J.'sP., when a Maori named Huiatahi appeared to answer a charge of theft of a £2O nolo, the property of another Maori named Sam Puni. Constable Mathew, who conducted the prosecution, slated accused had been working for Puni, at Te Ahuroa, and the latter had niisßed ihe money from the whare. Accused was charged with taking it and had admitted the act. Upon undertaking to obtain the amount and refund it to Puni accised was allowed to go. He had failed to keep his promise and had been arrested on the charge. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was com' mitted for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £SO each.
