CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.
SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. The Sunday school anni"ersary services were conducted in the Congregational Church on the 10th inst., by the Rev. Robert Mitchell, who has done such excellent pioneer work in this district. In the morning he preached from the suggestive of the prophet Zechariah, "and the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls, playing in its streets," and in the evening from I. John, 2, 7. The drift of the morning discourse as to emphasise the importance of regarding our duty, not as a hardship, but as a delight; and in the evening the preacher showed, in his own, earnest and appropriate manner, the great difference bewteen worldly achievements and true character. In the afternoon, and again on th 9 Monday evening, Mr Mitchell proved himself to be a true children's friend, for he held the attention of the young people in a very remarkable manner while he spoke of the giant 3 that they had to conquei, and of the lessons that might be learnt from flowets. The Monday evening's service was under the presidency of the pastor, the Rev. S. Griffiths; and, in addition to the recitations and the speech of the Rev. R. Mitchell, suitable addresses were given by the Rev. R. B. Gosnel! and Mr Floyd. Miss Butcher also rendered a sacred song in a very sympathetic and effective manner. Indeed the singing was a bright and helpful feature during the whole of these services, and much credit is due to Mr Macdonaid for his indefatigable labours in developing the musical powers of his admiring pupils. Miss Griffiths presided at th 9 organ, and Messrs Bartley, 'cello, Purcha3, cornet, Clapham and Blomfield, violins, made a very effective orchestra. The church had been tastefully decorated, and the secretary, Mr E. Dillicar, had prepared an excellent reportw hich, the chairman said, was a credit, alike to his herd and his heart. 'Refreshments had been provided byt he ladies of the congregation, and the distribution of prizes brought to a close a series of bright, happy, and encouraging meetings.
