FOR THE SABBATH.

BELIEVING. / (Dr Chapman). : '."He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life."—John 30, 36. Here is a condition and a promise. Fulfil the first and the second will be made good in your own experience. The personal pronoun "He" at the beginning of the next is not only for the individual, it is for all who need a Saviour. To believe is to receive the testimony concerning our Lord given in God's Word and illustrated in human experience. To believe on is to trust oneslr to Him, to make His promises personal, to accept the provision which has been made through Him, by His death on Calvary, for approach to God. If man fulfils his part of the text, God would not begin to break His Word by failing to keep His portion of the promise. His word has never yet been broken, and it cannot be broken in the future. Somebody came and lifted me Out of my sin and misery, Somebody came, Oh! Who could it be vVho could it be but Jesus? Do you ever think of Calvary? You think of your business but one day you will have to leave that to someone else and what then?

POINTED ARROWS. The great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. The World may be divided into two classes—those who get up and do somethnig, and those who sit by and ask why it was not done some other way. When we ask for more communion with God are we willing to part with all that hinders? There is no fault in our character that the grace of God cannot cure. Even if there were no Heaven it would still pay a man to be a Christian. Italia Gariabldi was one, of the two Methodists who represented Italy at the General Conference held a Minnesota. Signora Garibaldi says: "Methodists are gaining steadily and are getting hold of some of the best Italian families in all parts of the kingdom."

He nothing knows, who knows not this, The world can yield no settled bliss, No lasting comfort give; He all things knows, who knows to place His hop 9 on Christ's redeeming grace, Who died that we might live. The Bishop of Columbia says, "The drink traffic is still doing its deadly work. Are we to accept it as inevitable? Is the Church to be paralysed by tne power which undoubtedly the liquor trade possesses? Shall we make a determined stand and be prepared to face the question?" '•What is Scripture but God's letter to Hiß creatures? Now if yoji received a letter from your earthly Emperor you doubtless would not pause a moment, you would not rest, you would not sleep until you had learned what this earthly Emperor had written to you. The Emperor of Heaven, the Lord of men and angels has sent you His letters for the saving of your life. Study then, I pray you meditate daily on your Creator's words." —Pope Gregory the Great. Two natives in Madagascar walked 100 miles to obtain a Bible. Is it true that yours is dusty? Most of us have a "limp"—an ugly temper, a carelessness about truth, a habit of sneering—all "limps" that the world sees far more clearly even than we do. Your personal influence is a grave responsibility.
