AWAKINO COUNTY.
METHOD OF ELECTION. RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUE FAVOURED. Own Correspondent. At the request of a number of settlers from the Awakino district, a meeting in connection with the position of the Awakino County, now that it was operative, was held at Marokopa on October 26th. The visitors were Messrs C. Leech, R. Body, T. Blair, F. Armstrong, and W. Spencer. Mr P. C. Rose was voted to the chair. Considerable discussion ensued as regards what was the exact position, some expressing the opinion that as the county was already divided into three ridings, that the county should be cut up into three parts, allocating portions to Kawhia, Waitomo and Clifton, whilst on the other hand there we're advocates of Awakino remaining as a county, and controlling its own affairs. A resolution to the latter effect was put to the meeting and carried by nine votes to six. Mr C. "Leech said that a meeting held at the Awakino end that a resolution had been carried that in the event of Awakino doing its own business that rating on the unimproved value should be the system of rating adopted. He asked for an expression of opinion regarding the system at this end.
After a good deal of discussion a resolution was put to the meeting and the result was in favour of rating on the unimproved value as being the fairest and most desirable system.
The question of the allocation of booths for the election which is to be held was also discussed.
