DISTRICT ROAD WORKS.

HANGATIKI-CAVES ROAD. THE METALLING CONTRACT. The approach of the working season as far as the roads of the district are concerned is heralded by the calling of tenders for metalling work in various localities. Tenders for the metalling of the Hangatiki-Caves road were considered by the Waitomo County council on Monday evening. Seven tenders were received, the amounts ranging from £5300 to £4778 for metalling about seven miles of road. There is ample material for carrying out the work to advantage, good'limestone outcrops being handily situated along the road, and it is anticipated the work will be accomplished during the season. Messrs Lowry and Cartwright, of Inglewood, were the successful tenderers for the first 4£ miles at the price of 7s 2d per yard, the contractors to find their own plant. Saturday next tenders will close for metalling about 50 chains on the Te Kuiti-Mokau road between Pio Pio and Paemako, and for widening and metalling about 24 miles on the Mairoa road near the Mairoa township. The next metalling contract for Which tenders are to be invited i"b in the Aria district in connection with the Potaka special loan, for which the money has been provided.
