SHERIDAN STREET BRIDGE DELETED.

A special meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council was held on Saturday evening to re-coonsider the loan proposals. There were present his Worship the Mayor, Crs Forsyth, Floyd, Tammadge, Lusk, Julian and Walsh.

An amended proposal by the engineer was brought forward as follows: Dam for water supply, • £ISOO ; river deviation. £1200; extension of water mains. £500; portion ot Rora street, £1500; Sheridan street, £300; King street, £780; surface drainage in Sheridan and King street, £500; footpaths where required, £300: asphalt plant, shads, etc., £500; Hill street, £580; Duke street, £140; Queen street, £280; contingencies, £1420; making a total of £9500.

On the motion of Cr Lusk, seconded by Cr Julian, it was decided that Rora street be metalled to the crown of the load as far as Alexandra street. Cr Forsyth moved and Cr Julian seconded, that the original proposal of the council to raise £21,000 be carried and that the Sheridan street bridge be deleted. Cr Lusk expressed his emphatic disapproval of the motion in face of the very certain voice of the ratepayers' meeting, which decided that only sufficient money should be raised for works to be carried out during the season. He moved as an amendment that the council adopt the schedule submitted to the council that evening by the engineer, providing for a loan of £9500.

The amendment was seconded by Cr Tammadge, who expressed the opinion that the wishes of the ratepayers had been distinctly conveyed to the council and should be accepted. The amendment on being put to the meeting was losf, only the mover and seconder voting for it. The motion was put and carried, and it was decided that the £I2OO originally ear-marked for the Sheridan street bridge should be expended on the streets of the eastern side of the river. -

It was decided that a poll of ratepayers should be taken on November 7th.
