WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held at Te Kuiti on Monday evening. There were present Cra Suholes (chairman), Johnston, Gregg, Were, Berry, O'Dwyer, and Hoffman. Te Kumi Road.—The engineer and Cr Berry were authorised to get the outlet ot the drain on Te Kumi road cleared out and improved. Bridge Plans.—The Under-Secretary for Public Works wrote with respect to the supply of standard drawings suitable for county bridges. Received. ■ Aria Loan.—The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Taranaki wrote approving of the pledging of thirds up to the , amount of the special rate to meet / interest on the Aria loan.—Received. \ Thirds Hypothecated.—The Com- \ missioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, forwarded'certificates for the hypothecation of thirds in the Caves road and Mangaorino loans. —Received. Destroying Willows.—The UnderSecretary for Lands wrote stating that the Government was unable to W make any further grant for the destruction of willows in the Mangaokewa stream. —Received. Rangitoto-Tuhua 68G.—The Chief Surveyor, Taranki, wrote stating he could not a present arrange a 'date to inspect Rangitoto-Tuhua 68G, but would communicate with the county engineer later. —Received. Gravel Reserve.—Mr T. G. H caking, solicitor, Otorohanga, wrote on behalf of Dr Reekie, applying for £SO compensation fo taking a reserve in section 2A, Otorohanga.—Referred to council's solicitor. Kawa Road. —A number of settlers petitioned the council concerning the road between the railway and Kawa west creamery. They suggested that the road for a distance of forty chains across the swamp should be fascined. —Referred to the engineer. Otorohanga-Pirongia Road.—A petition was received from J. Fogarty and eight other settlers on the road requesting that the road be metalled.— Received. Otorohanga-Kihikihi Road.—Mr W. Hudson, secretary of the Kio Kio branch of the Farmers' Union wrote with respect to the grant of £2O made by the council in May last for repairing the road and which it was deemed advisable to defer. He now asked for the use of the grader as soon as possible and requested that the engineer sfcsald visit the lucality.—Referred to the engineer. Stone Crusher. —Messrs Andersons, Ltd., * wrote concerning the stone crusher, asking for instructions as to delivery. Mairoa Road.—D. L. MacKenzie wrote asking permission to put on two men to repair the road.—Referred to engineer. Owaikura Road.—J. Fogarty wrote puinting out the necessity for forming about eight chains of the road by hand labour. —Referred to engineer. Hangatiki - Waitomo Road.—The chairman Crs Johnston and Berry were appointed to open the metalling tenders with power to act. Swanton's Contract. —It was resolved that the matter of arranging for the completion of the contract be let in the hands of the engineer, and that he be empowered to allow up to £lO for extras. Caves Road. —On the motion of Cr Berry seconded by Cr Johnston the engineer was empowered to call tenders for making a slight deviation in order to cope with a slip on the road. Arapae Road. —The engineer was instructed to measure the slips on Mr Smith's contract and report to the next council meeting. The engineer was authorised to prepare plans and specifications and submit same to th 3 department for approval for the remainder of the formation, bridges and culverts on the Arapae road, and empowered to obtain matreial for erecting bridges and culverts if necessary, and call tenders for the works when plans and specifications have been approved by the Public Works Department. Te Raumauku Metal.—A. J.Phillips wrote requesting a progress payment on his contract. Payment of £2O authorised. Road Roller.—Cr Were gave notice of motion that the council take into consideration at next meeting the advisability of purchasing a road roller for the use of the council. Tenders.- -Messrs Gray and Crossley's tender of £74 10s for the Waihohonui road was accepted. Stone Crushers. The chairman drew attention to the necessity of the council providing crushing plants and saidf that while they temporarily had Wjth'kuse of the Government plants they <3id x aot know when they might be called upon to hand them over. In respect to the tenders called for metalling the Hangatiki-Caves road they had undertaken to provide a crusher if necessary. He moved that the matter of providing crushing plants be left in the hands of himself, Cr Berry and the engineer with power to act. Gr Hoffman seconded the motion. Cr O'Dwyer moved as an amendment that the council procure two crushing plants from the most reputable firm in New Zealand, and that the council as a body deal with the matter. . The amendment on being put was lost and the motion was carried. Kawa Bridge. —Mr W. Symes waited on the council with respect to the Waipa river bridge at Kawa. He said he was pleased to see provision had been made on the Estimates to erect the bridge and only had to re- { quest the council to urge upon the V-Govemment the necessity of starting the work immediately. On the motion of Cr Hoffman seconded by Cr Gregg it was resolved that the council urge upon the Government the necessity of getting the work done as goon as possible as the bridge was urgently needed to enable settlers to supply the dairy factory close to th ADDUcation for Road: A number of settlers included in the Kio Kio East Smosed special rating area applied 5 - tha survey of a road to give fccesslo their 'properties.-Referred to the En * ineer t0 reP °
