THREE POPULAR DAIRY BREEDS.
The comparison of the performance of the three breeds represented, in a dairy herd at the Ontario Agricultural College as published in the annual report cf the institution is interesting. On May Ist, 1908, nine cows representing three dairy breeds, Ayrshires, Holsteinß and Jerseys and three of each breed, were selected for an experiment to ascertain the production of milk, casein and butter fat in the milk of these cows for a series of years. During the whole period of the test from May Ist to November 15th, 1911, (less than three months in 1910), the three cows of each breed produced milk, casein, and milk fat as follows:—■
Ayrshires.—77,734lb milk, 2023.301b casein 3115.36 butter fat; average 26.0 per cent, casein; 4.01 butter fat.
