PREMIERS FOR THE SEASON

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES,

The competition for the footaall premiership of the Maniapoto Rugby Union during the season just ended was of a most exciting nature and resulted in the Te Kuiti Club obtaining the coveted distinction by a narrow margin from the Otorohanga Club. The members of the winning club celebrated their victory last night at a smoke concert in the Town Hall, at which the presentation

of the various trophies which go with the championship were presented. Mr N. C. Matthew, president cf the club, occupied the chair, and a number cf Union officials were also present. The trophies consist of the Maniapoto Rugby Union's championship banner and caps and a handsome competition shield presented by the Pukuweka Sawmilling Company. In making the presentation the

chairman congratulated the team upon

their record for the season, and referred to the necessity of living and playing up to a high standard. He trusted the club would maintain the position it had attained, and always merit the hearty sympathy and support of the people who had assisted and promoted the interests of the club. Mr F. Matthews, the club captain, responded suitably and handed the trophies to the president to hold on behalf of the club. Mr Hornibrouk, in a neat speech, referred to the interest which the chairman always had taken in the club, and presented him with a special cEp as a token of appreciation from the members of the club. | The medals donated by various supporters were presented as follows: — Best forward, Mr Healey; most improved forward, Mr Delaney: best back, Mr Matthews; most improved back, Mr L. Coldstream. During the evening the following toasts Were proposed: Navy and Army, Mr Lisaaman —Mr Moorhouse; Local Industries, Mr Boles —Mr Walsh; Maniapoto Rugby Union, Mr Branson —Mr Gresham; Local Bodies, Mr Langston —Messrs Scholes and Mora; Te Kuiti Football Club, Mr C. Matthew —Mr F. R. Matthews; Kindred Sports, MrH. Rothery—Mes.°rs Lisaaman, Steel, Walsh, Boles and Scholes; Native Friends, the chairman — Messrs K. Newton and D. Gray. Songs were rendered by Messrs Branson, Healey, Kneebone, Carr, Callaghan, Mitchell, Crosaley, Christian, Dewar, and Lissaman, junr. Mr Branson presided at the piano in his usual masterly manner.
