* HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM. Wellington, Monday. The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, October 6th, is as follows, quotations unless otherwise specified being average market prices on spot: — Mutton.—lhe market is firm, with a hardening tendency in anticipation of small arrivals. There is no immediate change in market prices, except for Canterbury, which is quoted at 4fd, and North Island 4Jd. Lamb,.—The market is steady, and
though there is not much demand, prices are firm. Canterbury s§d, other than Canterbury 5Jd. Beef. The market is slightly weaker, with less demand and large supply. New Zealand hindquarter 3fd, forequarters 3d. Butter.—The market is very firm for best quality, but quiet for second class quailty. Danish 121s, Siberian 110s, Australian 114s. Cheese; —The market is quiet, but stady. Canadian 655. The estimated quantity of Canadian in stock in England on the Ist October was 817,000 boxes. English cheddar 735. Hemp.—The market is firm, and prices continue to advance. It is reported that American buyers are operating fur a rise in Manila. Buyers, fearing an advance, are buying freely. Spot New Zealand good, fair grade £29, fair grade £l7 10s; fair current Manila £29; January to March, New Zealand good fair £29 10s, fair grade £2B; fair current Manila £3O. The output from Manila for thß week was 26,000 bales. Wool. —The market is firm at an advance. Current quotations for' Bradford tops are: 38's low crossbreds 14d to 16d 40's low crossbred
14d to 16d, 44's medium crossbred 15d to 14d, 50's halfbreds 18d to to 28d; 56's quarterbreds 21d to 28d, 60's merinos 26d. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on the annual sale of hoggets held at Marton on Thursday last on account of Messrs L. M. and H. L. Richards: Some 7000 head were yarded and buyers were present in good numbers the Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui and Palmerston districts being well represented. Bidding was spirited throughout and we have to report a successful sale at the following prices:—Ewe hoggets 16s 7d to 17s 3d, medium do. 14s 8d to 15s 4d, cull do, 12s Id, wether hoggets 14s lid to 15s lOd, medium do. to 13s 3d, cull do. ?s 2d, mixed cull hoggets, culls lis Id to lis sd, Romney ram hoggets 2Jgns, English Leicester do. ljgns. The Farmers' Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report as follows: —■ At Hamilton on 3rd inst., we had an entry of 1273 sheep, 105 pigs, 598 fat and store cattle and 110 dairy cows and heifers. Pigs sold as usual at extreme prices, sows £3 3s to sJgns, weaners up to 20s, slips to 455. The sheep were practically all fat and met a ready sale, wethers 22s 6d to 265, ewes 14s 6d to 17s 6d, woolly hoggets to 16s 6d, cull hoggats lis, fat steers £9 7s 6d to £l2, fat cows £6 10s to £9, two and a half year steers £5 15s, empty 2 year heifers £4 10s to £4 15s, best yearlings £3 7s Gd to £3 12s, smaller sorts £2 12s to £2 J Bs, store cows £3 15s to £4 ss, the purebred yaerling Holstein bulls made 20gns each, best dairy cows £9 to £l2 10s, best heifers £7 5s to £8 10s, backward sorts £5 15s to £6 10s. At Te Kuiti on October 2nd, we had a yarding of 490 head of cattle and 270 sheep. There was keen competition for the store cattle and prices were high. The whole yarding, except a few odd lots, were disposed of. Fresh 4 year steers made £7 14s to £8 7 a 6d, well-bred 3 year store steers £5 17s to £6 10s, two year steers £4 10s to £5, yearling steers and heifers £3 to £3 ss, fresh empty cows £4 10s to £5 ss, dairy heifers in calf £5 to £7, empty 2 year heifers £4 2s to £4 9s, a few dairy cows and heifera, close to profit, £8 15s to £9 ss.
