It is expected that the direct cable from Sydney ttf Auckland will be opened on Decebmer Ist. The laying of the new cable commences about November 9th, immediately after the arrival of the Silvertown, which conveys the cable from England. Mean-
time the Iris extends the BrisbaneDoubtless Bay cable to Auckland.
The cable steamer Patrol, from Singapore, starts to overhaul the New Zealand cable on Tuesday.
