KING COUNTRY LAND BALLOT.

J WHATITOKARUA BLOCK. The Taranaki Land Board conducted a ballot at the Courthouse, New Plymouth, on Thursday, for 27 sections comprising 12,694 acres in the Whatitokarua block, which is situated between the Ohura and the Ongarue rivers. The block contains many good sections and 138 applications were received. There would no doubi have been a greater number of applications but for the fact that all applicants had to be personally examined either at New Plymouth or Taumarunui, this step being taken by the board in order to ensure to the greatest possible extent that only bona fide intending settlers went to the ballot. Mr W. T. Jennings was chosen ias scrutineer, and in this capacity raised one or two interesting points. Onj was that if a man, his wife and members of his tamily put in their names for more than one section and either nf them were successful in the first ballot the remaining members should be struck out. He also suggested that in cases where applicants were successful and the man was known to be bone fide his cheque should be accepted as deposit instead of him having to carry about with him large sum in gold or notes.

The sections were drawn as follows: —Section 1, block 1, Rangi, 565 acres, W. L.
