IMPORTANT ROAD CONNECTION.
WIDENING THE MAHOE. PETITION TO MINISTER. Mr Vickerman, of Waitomo, has just returned to Te Kuiti from Wellington, whither he journeyed on behalf of the settlers to present a petition concerning the Mahoe road. This road is one of the most important in the district and efforts are being directed towards having it opened to the full width so as to permit of vehicular traffic from the railway right through to the Awaroa landing. About a month ago a deputation of settlers from the Awaroa end waited un the Minister for Public Works with a view to getting some work done from Awaroa towards Waitomo. The Minister a promised substantial grant for the work. The road is the full width for a distance of twelve miles from the Caves, but from the Mahoe junction it is desired that the work should be proceeded with in order to meet the work from the other end. The work is urgently requried, as many of the settlers are desirous of going in for dairying, and until the road is opened to the full width the adoption of the most profitable branch of farming is impossible. The widening of this road, moreover, is essential to the completion of a through road from Te Kuiti to the coast, when the direct Oparure-Wai-tomo road is constructed. The petition was presented through Mr C. K. Wilson, M.P., and was favourably received by the Minister.
