A PIO PIO ROAD.

LAND TO BE TAKEN. A QUESTION OF PRICE. At the July meeting of the Waitomo County Council a request was received from a number of settlers beyond Pio Pio for a stock track connecting the Mangaotaki road with the Awakino road near the school, the settlers offering to guarantee half the cost of taking the road. The council agreed to the request upon condition that a guarantee was signed by the settlers interested. At last council meeting the necessary guarantee was forwarded to the council but a proviso was inserted to the effect that the cost of the land was not to be included, and that a road which could be graded should be taken. In the circumstances the council declined to take action. However, in the meantime the difficulty was overcome and the ■ bond for signature was forwarded to the settlers. Exception was taken to the wording of the bond which provided that the road should only lead to the saleyard. At the council meeting on Monday evening Mr H. W. Battley waited on the council regarding the matter. Mr Battley said, as mover in the matter of the road, he thought there was some misundertanding. The idea as mooted was to take a stock track leaving the Mangaotaki road to the Awa- ' kino road. The document received from the county solicitors provided for a road from the Mangaotaki road to the saleyards. He pointed out the advisability of having the track put through from road to road. The settlers were agreeable to pay half the cost. The chairman said the matter was easily remedied. The bond should be altered to read as desired by the settlers. The council would take the necessary steps to secure the land under the Public Work Act. Mr Battley said they did not wish to pay any inflated value for the road. The chairman said the council had just the same feeling in the matter and when the value was fixed the.y could decide whether the price was too great. Mr Battley thanked the council and withdrew.
