LOCAL BODIES.
THEIR CLASSIFICATION URGED. The classification of local bodies, with a view to the dispensing of grants year by year according to the requirements of each locality, was the main point urged upon the Minister for Public Works on Tuesday by a joint deputation from the Cook and Waikohu County Councils. The deputation asked that County Councils particularly should be listed according to their area, rating power means of communication, etc., and that attention should be given to those most deserving of help. In his reply, the Minister said that he had advocated this idea for some time, and in the new Local Government Bill he hoped to see the proposal adopted. With a classification such as this it would be possible for the Government to set aside a certain sum for roads and bridges, and allow it to be distributed pro rata amongst the councils in relation to their needs. This would be better than the present system, but until the Cabinet endorsed the suggestion it would not be given effect to, and
