OTOROHANGA.

Own Correspondent,

Several matters that the Chamber I of Commerce have been agitating for are now being put in hand. A new metallic circuit has been erected, and we can now have direct telephone communication with Te Awamutu instead of through Hamiltton as formerly. Tenders are being called for a new courthouse, and also for a new police station and residence. Thesej have been urgently required, a nil* are to be erected upon a new and more elevated site. Nothing definite ha 3 been decided upon, so far, in regard to a new town hall.

The newly-formed Debating Society held their first public debate on Wednesday evening, the subject being "Is Compulsory Military Training Advisable in New Zealand." Mr Hall took the affirmative, and Mr Cox led for the negative. There was a splendid attendance for the opening night, and if real debating was lacking the speeches were both good and humorous, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves, which, possibly, is more than can be said for the upholders of the negative, who not only had to argue against their convictions, but also had to ba put up with defeat on the popular vot°. However, the debaters are very pleased with their opening night, and hope to get considerably more member*, and intend to take up debating in real earnest.
