ARIA RAILWAY COMMITTEE.
Own Correspondent. A meeting of the railway committee was held at .Aria on August 2nd. There were present —Messrs P. Smyth (chairman), Collins, Mayne, Riddle, Finnigan, O'Sullivan, Barnett and Petrie. Messrs Woof and Hickman were also elected members and were present. A letter was read from Mr Wilson M.P., saying he would be pleased to do all in bis power to further the objects of the committee. It was pointed out that the route proposed by the railway was an easy one and that by diversion to it from the Main Trunk -would shorten the distance between Auckland and Wellington by 24 miles, and would avoid many ugly grades, causing great wear and tear on rolling stock and loss of time.
It was resolved to widely circulate a petition for signature, to ask the co-operation of the Auckland Chamber cf Commerce and Auckland Railway League.
The settlement and development going on at the present time was marvellous, considering the drawback of shocking bad roads, and if only a railway were constructed, the necessity for which was admitted by Sir Joseph Ward, the progress would be immensely greater. The petition to the House will be backed up by ■every other means in the power of the committee.
All those having the petition for signature are requested to return their sheets to the secretary by Friday, 30th inst. •
