THE EGMONT SEAT.

TRIANGULAR CONTEST PROBABLE. MR JENNINGS A CANDIDATE. [BY TKLKGR.VI'TI. —I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. With remarkable promptitude the question of a by-election in Egmont has jumped into prominence in the lobbies, and it can bs quite safely asserted that the Government has been considering some possibilities of the sort for a long time. The party's North Island organiser has just spent a fortnight in the Egmont electorate, and there is a committee already in existence to assist the candidature of Mr J. Wilkinson, a well-known Eltham storekeeper, who is to carry the Governments colours. He has been in business in the district for twenty years, and wai an active member of the New Plymouth Harbour Board. Once before he has contested the seat unsuccessfully. At present Mr Wilkinson is in Vancouver, but he will return immediately, and his committee has a signed nomination paper ready. The ODposition candidate will almost certainly be Mr W. T. Jennngs, who represented Taumarunui in Parliament from 1902, till his defeat last election. He has a knowledge of the pioneer settlements scarcely excelled by any member of his party. His work has always been on behalf of the farming constituency, so that his chances of commending himself to the electors of Egmont are hopefully viewed by the Liberals. Mr Jennings is well known in the electorate, and every effort will be made by the principal parties to make the fight strenuous, but it is not likely to be a clear-cut test, on the first ballot as Mr Dive, a former supporter of Mr Masaey, who represented Egmont in the last Parliament has declared his intention of going to the poll again. If an effort is to be made by the Labour party to run a candidate the Hon. G. Fowlds will proably be invited to stand, the idea of ttio Labour men being that this will be an opportunity of showing a constituency of small farmers that the Labour platform will benefit them if it can be put on the Statute Book.
