' Work has been commenced on tho erection of extensive up-to-date meat freezing and canning works on Brisbane river, near the city, estimated to cost £350,000. A representative of the undertaking stated that the company is partly British and partly American, and denied a rumour that it is a branch of the American Meat Trust. It had, he added, been promoted with the object of assisting the pastoral industry and development of State.
At the inquest on the body of Ernest Turpin, killed on May 10th through a traction machine crushing through a bridge, near Havelock, the coroner returned a verdict of "Accidental death," adding a rider that it should be made unlawful for a local body to build a heavy traffic bridge without first submitting plans and specifications to the Public Works Department, and that such bridge should be passed by the engineer. "Young Men's Questions" is tho subject chosen by the Rev. R. B. Gos* nell for his fourth talk on current topics. Questions such as " Shall I bet?" "Shall I drink" will be asked and answered.
The residenta of Te Kuiti and outlying districts will be pleased to hear that the management of Burley'a Importing Stores, Rora street, late Rosenberg's, have secured the serviceß of Mr E. C. Balderson, late of Christchurch and Auckland, to supervise their tailoring, clothing, mercery and boot departments. Mr Balderson is a specialist in "men's wear" throughout, and is keenly alive to the needs of the men of to-ciay, both in town and country. The stocks have been repleted and special attention has been given also to the clothing for boys and youths. Intending purchasers would do well to visit the stores, nothing but the beat quality goods at the lowest possible prices are offered, and all clients will be treated with the utmost courtesy and attention.
The Prime Minister, when he was asked if Cabinet had considered furthre appointments tu the Legislative Council, replied in the negative, butstated that a Bill for reform of the Council would be introduced this session.

Dr Barrett, Melbourne, refutes the allegations contained in a letter in the Manchester Guardian that Australia and New Zealand apparently du not perceivo that they are decoys to help Lord Roberts' conscription Bcheme. Dr Barrett asserts that Lord Roberts Had nothing to do with the establishmeut of compulsory military service in Australia.
