. The engineer to the Town Board (Mr Sims) is busy at present taking levels, and preparing the plans for the grading, and forming of all the roads in the township. Whon the loan was applied'for certain sums of money were allocated for the various roads, and Mr Sims is now preparing to expend the moneys to the best advantage. Messrs Scott and Forsyth have secured the tender from tho Public Works Department for building the bridge over the Mangawhera stream on the new Otewa road. Gangs of me are busy forming the last mile of the road, and the approaches to the bridge. When completed, and opened up, this road will be a great boon to the Otewa settlers. At present their trßck is in an awful mess, practically impassable for wheel traffic. Owing no doubt to the excellent quality of the land, all being ploughable, llv> Otewa has attracted a great number of settlers. Despite the very inclement weather the special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce attracted s record attendance, and it is a very pleasing indication of the interest that is now commencing to be taken in matters affecting the welfare of the township and 'district. Mr Jno. Ormsby was elected delegate to accompany to Wellington the delegates from the Kawhia Chamber of Commerce to request that a trial survey be made for a railway from Kawhia to the Main Trunk line. The date was fixed by the former Minister for Public Works for July 17th, but the Chamber of Commerce have received word from Mr C. K. Wilson, M.P. for this electorate, that the deputation cannot be received before July 31st.
A meeting was called for Thursday evening by Mr Cox, an energetic new arrival, with a view to forming a debating society. It was raining very heavily at the time of the meeting, and very few faced the weather. It was considered that there was ample talent in the place to carry on a good society, and that it would be a splendid opportunity for men to learn to speak in public. After deciding to form an Otorohanga Debating Society the meeting adjourned until next Thursday evening with a view to securing a better attendance and more members. Mr Willis haa kindly given the society the use of hiß office to hold the meeting in next Thursday. A number has promised to attend to help the movement along and to learn the a.b.c. of debating.
Mr K. Vicary has the honour of being the first private person to secure the freehold of a town section in Otorohanga, tha sale of the freehold of two sections in Maniapoto street to him having just been gazetted. Mr Reynolds has secured the contract for erecting a storeroom and office for the use of the auctioneers at the Co-operative saleyards. A special sale, principally of dairy cows, is to be held on August Ist, 1912.
