TE KUITI DEBATING SOCIETY.

To the Editor

Sir, —I assume the not very onerous responsibility of replying to the letter contributed in Saturday's issue of this paper under the pseudonym of "WellWisher." I admit that on two occasions under \/ery warrantable circumstances the meetings of the society have been without notice, changed from the Municipal Hall to the County Chambers. The first occasion resulted from an inadvertence on the part of the late town clerk in not recording the society's engagement of the Municipal Hall, and allowing it to be used on the night in question lor another function. The second occasion resulted from a postponement of the meeting night on account of a distraction in the town which would have undoubtedly enticed away many of the society's members and supporters. j This explanation entirely justifies the action of the society, and leaves no room for the caustic remarks of "Well-wisher" concerning the management thereof. In conclusion I should like to indicate that, if "Well-wisher" is such a person as his pseudonym signifies, be would have accomplished more good and received more sympathy for his action by intimating the grievance privately to the committee of • the society, who are always approachable, rather than by seeking the publicity of the press and thereby incidentally discouraging the good prospects of the society. However, I invite "Wellwisher" to attend on Thursday evening next, at the Municipal Hall, and air his grievance from the Government Benches, where all "wellwishers" and other aggrieved persons are privileged to speak with the utmost freedom of speech.—l am, etc" ' ELIAS MARTIN, HOU. SeC.
