THE MAORI IN POLITICS.

MEETING AT TE KUITI

EX-MINISTER TO ATTEND

Preparations aro being made for a big Maori gathering at Te Kuiti on Tuesday next, when matters in connection with the political situation will be discussed. Sir James Carroll is to be present, and is expected to arrive at Te Kuiti on Monday. Sir Joseph Ward has also been invited, and will attend if engagements will allow of his doing so. The natives are already assembling, and large numbers are expected to arrive on Monday. King Mahuta is to be present together with a large number of Waikato natives.

It appears that the electors at this end of the Western Maori electorate are greatly dissatisfied at the action of Dr Pomare, who was elected for the seat at last election, in deserting jthe standard of Sir James Carroll, and 'joining the Reform Party under Mr Massey. In view of the possibility of another election in the near future the natives are desirous of selecting another candidate to contest the seat against Dr Pomare. Pepene Eketone, who was second on the list of candidates at last election, has intimated that he will not stand for election again. it is understood 1 that Anaru Eketone will be put forward as a candidate in the event of an election taking place in the near future.
