MOKAUITI.
Own Correspondent,
After a long promise the department has at last seen fit to lend us an eye of pity by giving us telephone connection with the world. Considering many months have elapsed since the necessary guarantee was sent to headquarters, nevertheless no small mount of red tape has been used in connection with its erection. The ganger in charge of the line has assured us we shall be in direct communication with other districts in a week or eight days from date. Truly when completed will be a boon to the set+lerg for all purposes.
Arrangements have been completed between Mr G. Bamfield (Nikau Grange) and the Auckland Education Board for the erection of a school on his property, which will be opened at an early date, and when completed will prove a boon to the little ones, thus preventing them from dragging through mud and bo?, and will considerably lessen the long distance to Mokauiti school. Mr E. Dowell has hi 3 new residence well on the way, and when completed it will be o£ handsome appearance. Rumour hath it, Mrs P. Clarke has resigned her position as headmistress at the Mokauiti school, but so far the rumour lacks confirmation. Rain, mud and bog holes are the present order of the day. Our road 3 are in a very bad state. Many of the settlers who had the good fortune to get their winter supplies in before the roads became a total wreck were lucky, indeed, and are constantly wondering how those who haven't provided their homes for the winter are going to keep their families alive through the winter.
Speaking of the road under repairs, opinions differ. Some hope o see teams carting from Waimiha to Tangitu shortly; others have given trie department unlimited time to complete the work. Bushfelling around here is going on apace. The experience of bai burns last year has in no way deterred the settlers, most of them having made up their minds for success. A dance was held in Mr Eriksson's woolahed on Friday last, by invitation. The promoters were Miss L. Hose and Mrs Cooper both of Mokauiti.
