LIGHTING TE KUITI.
THE ELECTRICAL SCHEME. TENDERS TO BE CALLED. At Monday evening's meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council the following report from Mr S. Irwin Crookes, electrical engineer, was received :-- "I have given the matter of the second hand machines offered for sale by the Government at Rotorua some careful consideration and you will find enclosed comments in connection l therewith. X have not been able to go up tc Rotorua this week, but if, after receiving the enclosed report, the council desires me to do so, I shall be only too happy to go to Rotorua and report after an actual examination. As I understand that the council meeting is fixed for Monday, June 10th. I think it possible that this matter will be considered then. There is another aspect of the matter, and that is, that the expenses of the report would ha saved if I did not go to Rotorua. "There is one other aspect that 1 would like to put forward and that is that the scheme that I have alreadymapped out would be put in the meltig pot as it would have to be entirely remodelled if alternating current was installed. "Power for Stone Crusher. —I am desirous of obtaining from the council a statement as to whether there is any likelihood of power being required for their stone crusher, which I understand is either in commission, or will be shortly. Should this be so it would be an easy matter to arrange for the stone crusher to be driven by an electric motor, cost of which would be very much less than an independent plant. It would, however, necessitate an increase in the size of the power station plant, but taking everything into consideration, this scheme would probably be !the most economical one to adopt, if they are not already pledged together arrangements. "Electric Fire Alarm.—l beg to suggest that the council install an electric fire alarm system, cost of which would probably be somewhere in the neighbourhood of £250 to £3OO. The indicator could be placed in the fire station, and the alarm points could be attached to the various transmission poles int he different parts of the borough. The tender on this will, of course, be an independent item, and could be cut out without interfering in any way with the electrical scheme, should the council so desire it.
"On the return of the plan with the mains marked on it, and the specification left at the Municipal Office on June Ist, I shall be ready in a few days to invite tenders, but I am very anxious to have a ruling from the council as to whether it is advisable to allow for power for the stone crusher. There is one matter that should be considered, and that, is the following information enclosed with reference to Diesel engines. —S. IRWIN CROOKES."
Referring to the report Cr Young said it wa3 evident the dynamos at Rotorua which had been offered to the council were not suitable for the scheme detailed by the engineer. He moved that tenders be called according to the report. Cr Forstyh said he thought on the report it would be wise to go in for the Diesel engines. The suggestion to supply power for the crushing plant was excellent.
Them was no doubt the power was necessary and the engine they already had could be exclusively devoted to the road roller.
Cr Somerville agreed with the previous speakers. It was good policy to increase the power and it would be a saving to the borough in the long run. Other Councillors favoured the increased power and the adoption of the Diesel oil engine and the report was adopted. Tenders to be invited as soon as possible.
