FAT STOCK MARKET,
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd,, report:— At the Westfield yards fat cattle ware yarded in less numbers than usual and at the start of the sale prices were the same, but improved as the sale proceeded. Oxen sold at 26s for best quality, others 23s to 25s per 1001b; cows and heifers 20s to 23s per 1001b. Steers sold at from £6 17s 6d to £l3 10s; cows £4 10s to £8 19s; heifers £5 to £7 12s 6d. The veal pens were well filled and sold at late rates. Heavy vealers sold at £4 Is; medium weight £2 10s to £3: others 20s to 355; small and fresh dropped 3s to 12s. Sheep were yarded in full numbers, and improved in price. Best wethers sold at from 16s 6d to 20s 3d; others, 10s 6d to 13s 6d; heavy ewes 13s 9d to 15s, 13s 6d to 15s 3d; others 10s 6d to 13s 6d; hoggets, shorn 12s to 13s 3d, others 12s to 18s. Pigs were yarded in full numbers, and sold at late rates. Baconers, £2 Is to £2 12s, porkers 32s to 38s d, slips 13s to 15s. Messrs Abraham and Williams report on their Marton sale on Tuesday: —We had fair yardings of both sheep and cattle but, owing to very rough ■weather the demand was not keen, except for lambs. We quote —Mixed lambs 10s Id to 12s 7d, mixed age ewes in lamb lis 2d to lis 7d, 2 tooth wethers 14s 9d, cull do. lis, fat ewes 12s lOd. cull ewes 4s. Dairy heifers, springing £7 to £8 15s, weaner heifers, poor 20s, do. steers 235, IS months steera £3 10s. HIGH COMMISSIONERS' REPORT.
The Commerce and Tourist Division of the Department of Agriculture and Commerce, and Tourists has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, under last Saturday's London date, quotations, except where otherwise specified, are average market quotations :
The markets are very unsettled on account of the continuation of the strike. Employers have decided to resists the strike. New Zealand meat and dairy produce cargoes cannot be discharged. Traders are drawing from stock at present in store. The Government has been requested to assist in sustaining the food suppy by affording protection during delivery from ships. Prices are nominally high for anything available. Mutton.—Canterbury, 4£d per lb; North Island, 4Ad per lb. Lamb.—Canterbury, lid per lb; other than Canterbury, 6£d per lb. Beef.—New Zealand hinds, 4|d per lb.
Butter.—The supply of Home and Continental meets the demand. Choicest New Zealand butter, per cwt., 115s.
Cheese.—The average prices for the week for finest New Zealand cheese, per cwt., is 78a; English Cheddar, 925.
Wool. —The market remains firm. Current quotations for Bradford tops: 3R's low crossbreds, 13Jd per lb; 40's low crossbreds I3sd; 44's medium crossbreds, lid ; 50's halfbreds, 17£ d; 56'squarterbreds, 19|d; 60's merinos, 25d. Cocksfoot Seed.—Tha market is dull. Buyers are not keen to do business in cocksfoot seed.
ANTWERP WOOL SALES. London, Wednesday. The Antwerp sales opened to a good attendance German buyers are specially competing for merinos. Prices are equal to those of last sales. Crossbreds are in Jess demand; 3352 bales of La Plata were offered, and 1947 sold.
