OPARURE-CAVES ROAD.
♦ REPLY TO DEPUTATION.
The following letter has been received by Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, concerning the road between Oparure and Waitomo, on which representations were made to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public. Works on the occasion of their visit, to Te Kuiti:
'' Referring to the deputation conHistinu: of Major Lubl; and Meßßrs Foy and I? odd in, which you introduced to mo at To Kuiti, and who urged the advisability of forming the road bo B6 to give direct connection between Te Kuiti and Waitomo Caveß, I have to state thai. I have now had an opportunitfy of looking into this matter and find that the distance from Te Kuiti to Waitomo Caves by the proposed new road is 11 miles 30 chains, whereas the distance from Hangatiki to Waitomo, where a road is already in existence, is only some six miles. The cost of the proposed new road has been estimated at approximated £2650, exclusive of any compensation which may be payable for land that it may be necessary to acquire. In view of the foregoing circumstances and the fact that there are so many other urgent works in this district which it ja necessary to provide for when monry ia available, I reget that I am unable to favourably consider the application made by Ihe deputation.— W. J). S. Mac Donald Minister of ! Public Works."
