TE KUITI-AWAKINO ROAD.

MEETING AT PIO PIO.

The meeting of ratepayers interested in Te Kuiti Awakino main roadjmetalling scheme, convened by Mr P. O'Dwyer, councillor for Paemako riding, was held at Pio Pio yesterday. There was a good attendance and Mr O'Dwyer was voted to the chair.

In opening tho meeting tho chairman explained that the meeting had been convened for the purpose of getting the ratepayers together to discuss the question of metalling the main road and to decide as to whether a loan should be raised by the settlers for the purpose. In referring to the rucent meeting held at Pio Pio when the principle of raising a loan was affirmed and a committee appointed to go into detail the chairman said that meeting was not composed of ratepayers and had no legal standing. The meeting was open for discussion, and he invited those present to bring forward any matter in connection with the subject. Mr Aulder said ho wished to move that the meeting affirm the principle of rating on unimproved values and take steps to approach the council with a view to having a poll taken on the question. After some discussion a suggestion that the rating question stand lover till the metalling question had been discussed was adopted.

Mr Hack then moved and Mr Kilmartin seconded that as Te KuitiAwakino road was a main arterial thoroughfare it should be metalled by the Government.

An amendment was moved by Mr Livingston and seconded bv Mr LindBay that the meeting hold over consideration of the question pending a report from the committee appointed by the previous meetnig. The chairman refused to accept the amendment as he held the previous meeting, not being composed of ratepayers, had no standing. An amendment that consideration of the matter be deferred for a fortnight was then moved by Messrs Lindsay and Williams. The amendment was negatived and the motion being put was carried. The matter of rating was then considered and the following motion, moved by Mr Battley and saconded by Mr Aulder, wbs proposed:—"That this meeting take steps to circulate a petition to present to the County Council for the purpose of having a poll taken to determine whether or not the ratepayers of the county desire to be rated on the unimproved value." After a desultry discussion, the motion was put and carried. The following committee was elected to further the matter:—Messrs Power (Paemako), Robertson and Bones (Te Mapara), Aulder (Mangaotaki), C. J. and S. Riddle (Aria and Kaeaea), Johnson (Mairoa) and Bevege (Pio Pio).
