PIRONGIA MILITARY SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

The weather for the Firongia military sports was all that could be desired and tthere was a very largesttendance, outside townships being well represented. Captains Burgess and King and Sergt.-Major Coleman from the Staff were present.
The first event was the Miller Shield, for which 24 competitors lined up, end the following are the first 12: —Private P. B. Holmes 76, 1; Sergt. J. Holmes 76, 2; Private W. Holmes 74, 3; Private J. Anderson 72, 4; Private E. Meyers 70, Sergt. P. Ellis 69, Sergt. EI. Beere 6S, Private R. Jones 68, 'Private Budden 68, Private W. Carter 67. Sergt. Kewish 67, Private R. Dumfrell 66. Private W. Holmes receives the medal for the best shot, and Private E. Meyers for iudging distance.
Led horse, ever four flights ot hurdles.—Sergt. J. Holmes 20, 1; Sergt. P. Ellis 12, 2. Fours over four flights of hurdles. —Sergt. Holmes 41, 1; Sergt. Ellis 28, 2;'Sergt. Beere 26, 3. Victoria Cross.—Sergt.-Major Hall 1, Sergt. Holmes 2, Private Binnie 3. 'Best mounted trooper.—Private. K. Anderson 1, Sergt. Beere 2, Private B. Holmes 3.
Wrestling on horseback, teams of four.—Te Awamutu beat Otorohanga and Pirongia. _ Whistling race. Private A. rear won for Miss M. Keys.
In the evening a social was held in the hall which building was so crowded that it could have been twice the size. Songs and recitations were rendered between the dances, the fallowing contributing—Recitation, Mr Cardon, encored; violin solo, Mr Moeller, ; picno solo, Mrs McCarthy; Mr Csrdon also delighted the audience with "Baby Ribbon" and "The House that Jack Built." Captain Black made the presentations and congratulated the troop on bavins such public support. On behalf of the troopers he thanked those who had donated medals and trophies. Dancing was kept up t• 12 the small hours, Private C. Peat acting as M.C. and the muisc was sunplied by Mrs Sullivan, Miss McLeod, Miss Sing and Privates Peat and J. Milligan.
