SULPHURIC ACID EXPLOSION.
Received May IS, 10.45 a.m. Sydney, This Day
An iron drum containing ten hundred weight of sulphuric acid, exploded on the wharf, splashing the contents over five men, who were working in the vicinity. A labourer named Granger received the full force of the acid on the face and body. Another labourer named Smith also was frightfully burned, while others were splashed on the arms and face. The injured men screamed and writhed in excruciating pain. Smith plunged intu the harbour.
Wherever the acid touched the clothing the material fell in pieces. The injured men were conveyed to the hospital. Brathwaite and Smith were in a critical condition, but the others are not seriously hurt.
