HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION*. ] Wellington, Monday. The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, May 11th, is as follows (quotationa unless otherwise specified being average market prices on spot) : Mutton. —The market is quiet, but firm. Prices, nominally, are: Canterbury, 4|d; North Island, 3§d. Lamb.—The market is active, with good demand and prices are firm. The market has been favourably affected by a shortage of Home supplies and a decline of 23 per cent, of imports dur-
ing the year. The weather corjinues favourable. Canterbury, 0d; other than Canterbury, sd. Beef. —The market remains firm, and a good demand continues. Best quality is scarce. New Zealand hindquarters, 4|d; fores, 3§d. Buter.—The market is steady, with improved demand The decline has been checked, and, on the whole, prices are slightly better this week. Choicest New Zealand butter to-day, Ills; Danish, 115s; Siberian, lU6s: Argentina, 105s; Autralian, IOGs. Cheese.—There is a better demand, and the market U firmer. New Zealand white, 70s to 71s; coloured 71s, tu 725.
Hemp.—The market closed firmer, with more inquiry, and good business has been done. New Zealand good fair grade, on spot £22; New Zealand fair grade, £2O 15s; forward shipment about the same. The Manila market is steady at previous quotations, viz., spot £2l Is and forward shipment £22. The output from Manila for the week was 33,000 bales. The stock of New Zealand hemp is 268 tons. Wool. —The market remains firm.
