MAROKOPA.

Own Correspondent. Mr Roy Haylock, the holder of the Willison Cup for sculling, met Mr Tom Vicary in a contest on the river on May 4th. This was the first sculling event held for the cup for a long time. The contest was watched with interest by the sporting enthusiasts and friends of the young athletes. The challenger, Mr Vicary, had the advantage in age, which proves in a certain stage of life a benefit, in another stage a disadvantage. The raceresulted in a win to the senior of the youths, Mr T. Vicary, who is re quired by a third challenger to defend his claim to the much coveted cup, at a time (to be arranged) on the next spring tides. The management of matches is under the control of the fallowing committee elected by a public meeting: J. Willison (chairman), P. Hell (secretary), A. Haylock, R. Honore and F. Bell.

It is expected that a large area of bush will be felled this season. Good bushmen are in demand. Big framed men of handsome appearance and refined states, and who are unknown to other toilers, sometimes experience difficulty in finding work as they are suspected of being in the employ of the Department of Justice. Mr Verne Jackson, the well-known photographer, has been busy this week taking photus of local beauty spots, etc.

A dance in aid of a tennis club ia advertised to take place in the local hall on Empire Day. 24th inst. Its popular secretary, Mr Jim Patterson, assisted by Mr Geo. Richards, our local postmaster, have the matter well in hand, and the public may rest assured that every effort will be made to give them an enjoyable time.
