The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, April 20th, is as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) : Mutton —The market is quiet, but firm. Heavy weights are difficult to selkat an average of 31 d. Good demand continues for lighter carcases, which are selling at an average of -id. Ewes old.

Lamb —The market is steady.- with very good demand, and prices are firm at last rates quoted, viz., Canterbury 5.2 d, other than Canterbury sg d.

Beef —The market remains firm. Owing to small supply, ;i good demand continues. New Zealand hindquarters 4.id, fores o.jd. Butter—The market is very depressed and buyers are holding back, expecting prices to go lower. A large decrease in consumption is reported on account of high prices and labour troubles recently. The average price for the week of choicest New Zealand butter was 114s, Australian 112s, Argentina 110s, Danish 12Gs, Siberian 112s.

Cheese —The market is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker. The stock is moderate. The average price for the week of finest New Zealand cheese was 725.

Hemp —The market J3 steady, but there is. no demand. New Zealand good fair grade ,£2l 10s to £2l 15s, New Zealand fair grade £2O for any position. The Manila market is firmer. Fair current Manila on spot £2l 10s, forward shipment £2l 15s. The output from Manila for the week was 24,000 bales. Woul —The market is quiet, but steady. Current quotations are: Bradford tops 3G's, low crossbreds 13d, 40's low crossbreds V3h<3, 44's medium crossbreds 14cl, 50's halfbreds 17?>d, sG's quarterbreds 19:,' d, HO's Merinos 24^jd.

Hops—The market is firm, with an immproved demand, but no change in prices. English £l3, Californian £l.
