THE TREND OF CULTIVATION IN BRITAIN.
The British agricultural statistics newly issued show that the tendency still is for land to go out of cultivation. The cultivated area declined by 51,272 ;jcrrs in United Kingdom last year, and grazing land increased by 31,4.04 acres. During the past ten years the reduction of the cultivated area has amounted to 323,000 acres. It does not appear that the legislative enactments of late days will do much to arrst this trend. The practical man knows too well the increasing risks and hindrances which are being put in his way when ha keens houses and men, Public health and sanitary troubles were sufficient to worry the farmer but the imposition of tax* gathering burdens is getting near to the last straw. There are many farmers who foresee clearly the increasing worries which will be born with the beginning of thin iax-gathering, and intend to alter their style of farming acccordingly. On the best classes of°land the pleasures of cultivation will continue but on poor, unkindly soils, the sheep will take the place of the man.
