TE KUITI SPORTS.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

The annual meeting of Te Kuiti Sports Club was held at the racecourse on Wednesday last, and was highly successful. The track was somewhat heavy as a result of the heavy rain which fell on Tuesday night, but otherwise was in very fair order. An excellent programme had been arranged and very fair entries were received for the various events. The Highland events proved a decided attraction. The afternoon was enlivened with the skirl of the bagpipes and Celtic hearts responded freely to the enlivening; strains, while strathspeys, reels and sword dances were keenly contested. In addition, dances and jigs dear to the sons of Erin were witnessed and applauded by enthusiastic partisans. A great amount of interest was created in the sprint running events in consequence of the appearance of A. B. Postles, the world s champion short-distance runner. In both the hundred and two hundred and twenty yards races the champion put in great efforts, getting second in the former and winning the longer race. Despite the heavy nature of the track Postles registered very fine times in both events. In the hundred, starting from three yards behind scratch he got to within half a yard of the winner in a tick over ten seconds. In the two hurnded and twenty, starting from five yards behind scratch, he won comfortably in 22 4-ssecs. The nup presented by Messrs Chilcott and Albrechtsen in the athletic events was won by W. R. Hogg, who gained first place in the 100 yds and 440 yds and second in the 220 yds. The chopping contests gave rise to some stirring struggles, J. O'Sullivan winning the big chop by a stroke from D. Pretty, the positions bping reversed in the underhand chop. The handsome medal presented in the chopping events by the Rangitibei Sawmillers' Association, was tied for by Pretty and O'Sulilvan, and in the draw the former won. In a financial sense the meeting was a success despite the drawbacks experienced and the officials are to be congratulated on the result. In the eveninc a social was, held in the Town Hall and a very pleasant evening was spent. Items were contributed by Mrs Quirk and Miss Clifford, and were much appreciated, while the efforts of the "kilties" contributed greatly to the success of the evening.
