OTOROHANGA.

The since we have had a week's dry weather has been laden with smoke, and in every direction can be seen rolls upon rolls of smoke. There ha 3 been an immense amount of bush felling and scrub cutting this past season, and given a normal season, settlers would have had a good clearing. With the continuous wet and humid weather that we have had all through the summer, the underscrub and fern has made a tremendous growth, and the buns are not turning out as good as they ought to. Settlers who burned immediately the fine weathsr set in complain very much about their poor burns, and attribute it to the green undergrowth and particularly to Scotch thistles, which have grown to a great size this year. The several road contractors are taking advantage of the fine weather, and are pushing on their work very fast. One firm has no less than seventeen teams going on one portion of road - ~ j - n • A meeting is being caned xor Friday, by Messrs Vicary, Wills, Whyte, Hos'king, Phillips and Forster to discuss the question of forming a Chamber of Commerce. There are quite a number of matters that want attending to, and a Chamber of Commerce would have plenty of work for Borne time to come. The Angel of Death paid an unwelcome visit to Otorohanga last Monday and took two wee children to their long borne. The first to be taken was Mr and Mrs Drummond's baby girl, three months old. The had not been really robust from birth, but latterly appeared to be doing well, when she was isuddenly taken bad and did not linger long. The second house visited was Mr Fred Earl's, and his only child, a girl three years old, was called suddenly. It cast quite a gloom over our little township, and very great sympathy is extended to the parents, who are all well known and highly respected.
