CRICKET.

The Auckland touring team returned home at the beginning of the week with the Plunket Shield in possession. The team was highly successful, winning the games against Canterbury and Wellington, while the Otago match was abandoned on account of bad weather. Ail the matches were well contested, the two games that were finished being just won in the second innings, by a narrow margin in each case. Judging from present appearances it seems as if the Australian team to contest the triangular games in England during the coming season will be without the services of the famous six who wish the team to elect its own manager. However, the players chosen to replace the six can be depended on to render a good account of themselves and the omission of the older players may not be a bad thing for Australian cricket. In any case the Board of Control by taking a firm stand has left no doubt as to the intention of the Board to exercise a very real control of the game. This in itself is a desirable thing. However good individual players may be their tenure is limited to a few years. On the other hand the game continues to be the national pastime and the efficient control thereof is in the interests of cricketers and the public for all time.
